Short tales about deadly books, by top mystery authors

A thrilling Condor novella from the bestselling author of Six Days of the Condor.

Vin, a name of convenience for the agent known as Condor, has been released from psychiatric care and it’s back to work. Unfortunately, he’s been assigned the mundane job of sorting through books meant for the incinerator instead of the high-adrenaline rush of being a covert spy for the CIA. Struggling to separate hallucinations from reality, Condor attempts to immerse himself in the task at hand, but his acute sense of danger soon overwhelms him. While wandering the labyrinth of the Library of Congress’s subterranean tunnels, he encounters a damsel in distress. Someone is following her, and Condor can’t resist the lure of covert ops—or placing his own life in jeopardy.

James Grady revolutionized the thriller genre with his CIA analyst codenamed Condor, immortalized by Robert Redford in Three Days of the Condor, and currently portrayed by Max Irons in the all-new TV series Condor.

The Bibliomysteries are a series of short tales about deadly books, by top mystery authors.

CONDOR returns!

Put out to pasture once and for all, Condor is now working at the Library of Congress, sifting through books slated to be pulped. Life is now quiet, easy, and uneventful, which Condor deserves after all he's been through.

Naturally…. Condor being Condor, he starts a quiet job and ends up helping a co-worker with a stalker and stumbling into the middle of an all too real plan that would have an *unbelievable* effect on our country, if not the world.

It doesn't take long for all the old instincts to come back, and soon enough Condor is racing the clock. The mindset and skills he hoped were now gone come back with a fierce intensity and he risks his life doing some of the most outrageous things any person could be asked to do.

If you're a fan of THREE DAYS… or NEXT DAY... or LAST DAYS… this short and sharp novella is the perfect thing to read on a Sunday afternoon!

Review CONDOR IN THE STACKS by James Grady ( Bibliomysteries #28))

The iconic spy known as Condor is adrift in his new enforced position in the subterranean depths of the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. In his new position, he tries to save books instead of sending them for pulling (recycling). He also strives to retrieve his missing memories, fogged by CIA medication.

I reviewed a digital ARC generously provided by author and publisher via NetGalley, for review purposes only, at no remuneration.
Released from a secret CIA mental hospital, the Condor finds himself working in the Library of Congress, ‘processing’ books that will be turned to pulp, a far cry from his usual courageous work.

But something’s weird here; he has been asked to sort through nine bins of books and decide those to be pulped, but there are only seven – where are the other two?

Putting stray pieces of evidence together, he discovers a plot to blow up and burn the stacks containing every book in the world – and he seems to be the only person able to stop this!

This wild ride of a short novel written with an impressionist view of his new free world and the streams of the reality that force him to save the treasures of the written word – grab this baby! It’s the perfect head to bed, lunch time read, commuting via train or bus thriller! And you need a little wake up, am I right? Of course I am!
Condor fans know from reading Last Days of the Condor that the Condor, sometimes known as Vin, was heavily medicated and given a (supposedly) safe and undemanding job at the Library of Congress, sorting books into bins for reshelving and recycling. Vin thinks pretty much all books should be saved. That attitude makes him well suited for the Bibliomysteries series, in which established mystery/crime/espionage writers use books, libraries, bookstores, or other book-related themes as the story’s background.

The text of the story mentions or alludes to about a dozen authors. James Grady acknowledges them at the end, which is helpful for readers who recognize, but can’t quite place, an allusion.

Vin tries to kick back his sedation long enough to help a library employee named Kim who thinks she is being stalked. Meanwhile he tries to solve the puzzle of why he packed seven coffins full of books for recycling but nine coffins are being hauled away.

The plot is beyond far-fetched and it isn’t fully developed. I'm not sure it even makes sense. Still, it entertained me. I liked the story, but not nearly as much as I liked the last Condor novel, which had a depth of character and intricacy of plot that can be difficult to achieve in a short story. I probably would not recommend this story to readers who did not read and enjoy Last Days of the Condor.

Some readers are turned off by Grady’s writing style, which is far from conventional. Odd punctuation, sentence fragments, and stream of consciousness sometimes take over the narrative. The frenzied, off-kilter style reflects Vin’s shaky mental status. I like it for that reason but I realize that it puts off readers who are looking for straight-forward prose. If you are one of those, be warned that this might not be the story for you.
Amazing read. Couldn’t put it down until I was finished.
Condor is back in the stacks, this time at the Library of Congress. Assigned to search thru books from closed military bases for classified documents or notes, prior to disposal, the reluctant, but ever observant, Condor uncovers a puzzling discrepancy in the delivery/disposal records. He also meets a terrified LOC staffer who is being stalked on the job and feels compelled to help find the stalker. From there, the two seemingly unrelated threads become entangled and, once again, we are off on a nail-biting, rollercoaster ride of confusion, conspiracy, sleuthing, and suspense. My only complaint is it's over almost before it begins.
